Understanding Hair basics

Why all this hoo-ha about hair?

All hair strands/shafts are dead tissue. Then, why all this fuss about hair, how much we have, how much is falling, how grey it is becoming, etc, etc. Why the stress, the angst and the pain when we have a bad hair day? Why do we start using all kinds of remedies that anyone recommends the moment we see any hair fall?

The answer is fundamentally simple, though the underlying motivations may be complex to understand. Hair symbolises youth, it stands for beauty, it very often defines the way we perceive ourselves. Our perception of scalp hair contributes to an overall body image, the image that one likes to see in the mirror and hopes to project to others. A fact increasingly recognized by physicians and psychologists, hair loss can contribute to disturbance of body image, with resulting loss of self-esteem. The psychological and emotional effects associated with loss of self-esteem can, in some persons, become psychologically disabling anxiety and depression.

The other side of the coin, of course is how good we feel when our hair does everything right. I have a colleague who will fix her hair perfectly the night prior to an important meeting so that she walks in ready and confident! Lovely hair does more to a person's perception of her own attractiveness than do the best of clothes and jewellery. Hence, while hair may not perform important or life saving functions for us, it is extremely important from every other perspective in our lives!

It is also apparent that there are countless products available for hair in the marketplace. Shampoos, conditioners, oils, gels, serums, mousses, creams, cream gels, masks, mud packs, the list just goes on and on. So, how is it even possible to make sense out of this seeming confusion, and pick the products that we need for our hair?

The first step towards this is to understand what hair is all about, why it behaves the way it does and what influences the behaviour of our hair in different scenarios. So,what really is this mysterious strand that so rules all our lives?
